What are Quizzes?

Quizzes are a type of test that assesses your students' learning. Quizzes can test a students comprehension of the course content during the course (also called formative assessment) or at the end of a course (also called summative assessment).

It is important to assess your students' learning throughout a course (i.e. use formative and summative assessments) to gauge whether they are learning what you want them to learn or if they need extra support.

Quiz Question Types

In Moodle there are many quiz question types as you can in the image below. In this section, we will focus on multiple choice and True/False questions but we encourage you to explore the other question types in your course shell. You can have several question types in one quiz.

Adding Media Files to Quizzes

When you start creating a quiz, you will notice that there will be text editor windows available to you throughout the quiz creation process. This allows you to not only add text but also links, media files, images, and files to your quiz.

Creating a Quiz

We are going to create a simple quiz with a multiple choice question and a True/False question. The quiz activity has many options and we encourage you to explore quizzes further in your course shell.

  1. Turn on edit mode and select “Add an Activity or Resource”.

  1. Select the Quiz activity.

  1. Name your quiz and give it a description. Remember, you can use the text editor to add links, videos, audio files, and images to the quiz description. Review the settings. There are many settings and we encourage you to explore them. We will not be changing any settings in this example. Press “Save and Display” when you are finished.

  1. Select “Add question”.

  1. Press “Add” then “ + a new question”.

  1. Choose the type of question you would like to use. If you press on the circle beside the question type, a definition of the question type is displayed. Press “Add” to add the question to your quiz.

  1. Now you are going to create the quiz question which involves many steps.

  2. First, name your question.

  3. Write the question in the text box. Add media files if you’d like. In this example there is an image added to the quiz question.

  4. Select if there will be one or more than one correct answer.

  1. Add your first answer. In this example, the first answer is the correct answer for the quiz. There is only one correct answer to this question so the grade field was changed to 100%. Feedback was added to the question. Students see the feedback when they answer the question.

  1. Add your other answers. In this example, there are 2 more answers added that are incorrect. The grade field remains as “None” because the answers are incorrect and worth 0%. Feedback was added to the questions to encourage students.

  1. If you would like to add more answers to your question, press “Blanks for 3 more choices”. This multiple choice example only has 3 answers so that step is not needed.

  2. Press “Save changes”.

  1. The new question will appear under the questions tab of the quiz activity. Press the magnifying glass icon to preview the question (i.e., see what it will look like for students). Press the garbage can icon to remove the question from the quiz.

  1. Now we will add a True/False question to our quiz. Under the question tab, select “Add” and then “+ a new question”.

  1. Choose True/False and then press “Add”.

  1. Create your True/False question. This involves several steps.

  2. Select a category for your course. Create a question name. Write the question. Remember you can add media files like videos, images, and audio files to your question, if you’d like.

  3. Choose if the correct answer is going to be True or False.

  1. Write feedback for both answers. Feedback is helpful to motivate students and to provide information on why a question is correct or incorrect.

  2. Press “Save changes”

  1. The new question will appear under the questions tab of the quiz activity. Press the magnifying glass icon to preview the question (i.e., see what it will look like for students). Press the garbage can icon to remove the question from the quiz.

Question Bank

As you can see, creating a quiz takes some time and effort. When you create quiz questions, they get saved in the Question Bank. This allows you to save time and reuse questions that you have created in other quizzes and courses. You can also access questions made by your colleagues.

In the image below, you can see the two questions created in this section listed in the question bank.
