Editing Your Text

In Lesson 3.2 Adding Content Using Pages, you learned how to create a page and enter text.  In this lesson you will be formatting your text and moving your page to where you want it.

To go to your content, you will need to be logged in, have found your course under “My courses” in the menu and clicked the “Edit mode” toggle in the top of your screen.  You can then click on the page you wish to edit, under the topic title.  To find your page you can either scroll down through your course topics, or look at the menu on the side of your screen. Your page should be listed in the menu.

To edit text in a page, click on “Settings”.  You can now format your text in the Content section.

The Content Menu

At the top of the content box is a menu.  Here are some of the functions of this menu which can be used for formatting text:

  •  Style: you can use this menu to organise your text into headings, subheadings and paragraphs.  To change your text to a heading, click on the line you would like changed and choose “Heading (Large)”.  Once you have a heading, if you hit enter, the next line will automatically be in the paragraph format.  It is recommended that you keep the same style for headings and paragraphs throughout your course to make it easier for your learners to read.

  •  Bold/Italic: you can change the look of text by highlighting text and choosing these options.  They will help direct your learners’ attention to a particular area.

  •  Bullets/numbering: use this option to create lists in the format of your choice.  Hit “enter” to add another bullet.

  •  More options: click this button to see more menu options. If you click this option you will have access to further functions such as:

  •  Text appearance: these buttons will change how your text appears, with underlining, strikethrough, or sub or superscripts.

  •  Text alignment:  You can keep all your text aligned the same way, or centre a title or some other information by highlighting it and choosing alignment.

  •  Indent:this feature can be used in regular paragraphs, or with the bullet and numbering tool to create sub-bullets.

  • Special characters and tables: you can add symbols from a menu or a table to your page with these features.

  •  Undo/redo: if you have made a mistake, these buttons can undo your work.

  •  Accessibility checker: when you press this button, moodle will make suggestions on how to make your course easier to view for your learners.  These are only recommendations, and may not be necessary.

If you make any changes to your text, make sure to click one of the save options at the bottom of the screen.

Moving a Page

To see your page of text, click on the “General” tab at the top of the menu on the side of your course.  Make sure you have clicked on the “Edit mode” tab at the top of the screen.  There are two options to move a page within your course:

  1. Click and drag: if you move your mouse over the block with your page on it, a 4-way arrow symbol appears.  When this arrow is visible, click and hold the mouse button.  You can move the page anywhere in your course as long as you continue to hold the button.  Once you release the page will be located in a different location.  You will also see that it has moved locations in the side menu.

2. Using the more menu: on the side of your page is a symbol of 3 vertical dots.  If you click these dots you will be given a menu with more options.

You can then choose “Move”.  A menu will appear with your course headings.  You can choose a new location by clicking a heading, or going to a subheading by clicking the arrow beside a heading.  Your page will be relocated below the heading you have chosen.
