Objectives:

By the end of this section, you will be able to:

  • State why hyperlinks are useful

  • Distinguish between a hyperlink and plain text

  • Add and edit a weblink to your course

What are Hyperlinks?

Also called a link or web link, a hyperlink is text or an icon that you can click on to get to another website or another location on the website you are already on. The link can take you to a website page or a file found online such as a document or video.

You can identify the hyperlink because the text is usually blue and underlined. For example, if you click on this hyperlink DD Courses you will be taken to the DD Courses website.

Hyperlinks are useful because you don’t have to put a long web address, also called a URL, into your course. For instance, this website url - https://courses.darakhtdanesh.org/mod/page/view.php?id=14 can be shortened to ‘contact form’ via hyperlinking. This saves space and makes the course content more visually pleasing.

How to Add Hyperlinks to Your Course

There are two ways you can add hyperlinks to your course in Moodle:

  1. By using the URL resource in the Activity Chooser or;

  2. By adding a URL in the content area of a Page resource

Let’s start with adding a URL using the Activity Chooser.

  1. Go to your course and turn on edit mode. Then select “Choose and Activity or Resource”.

  1. Under the Resources tab, select the URL resource.

  1. Add the name of the link. The name you give will appear as blue underlined text in the course. Then add the website address, also known as the URL. Click “Save and Return to Course” to finish.

  1. View the link on the course page. It’s good practice to click on the link and check that it works properly. You can click on the pencil icon to make changes, if needed.

Another place to add a link to your course is in the content area of a Page resource. Let’s take a look at how to do this.

  1. Go to your course and turn on edit mode. Then select “Choose and Activity or Resource”.

  1. Under the Resources tab, select the Page resource.

  1. Start by giving the page a name and then add some text in the content area.

  1. Using your mouse, highlight the word or words you would like to link and then press the link icon. Note: the keyboard shortcut for the link tool is ctrl + K.

  1. Add the URL for the website, select “Open in new window”, and then press “Create link”.

  1. Now you will see the hyperlink in the content area. Notice that the text is blue. Lastly, you need to save your page by pressing “Save and return to course”.

  1. Your students will see the link on the page you just created.
