Objectives:

By the end of this section, you will be able to:

  • Understand what type of media files can be added to a course

  • Add a sound or videos file to your course

Media Files Types

In Moodle, you can add an audio file like an mp3 file or a video file like an mp4. We sometimes call these types of files media files.

Adding audio files and video files to your course helps to make the course more engaging and interesting for your students. It is important for students to receive information in multiple ways like text, video, sound and images to deepen their learning experience.

Adding a Media File from the Internet

  1. Go to your course and turn on edit mode. Then select “Choose and Activity or Resource”.

  1. Under the Resources tab, select the Page resource.

  1. Give the page a name.

  1. To insert a media file from the internet, click on the media icon.

  1. Under the Link tab, enter the URL for the media file and create a name for the file. Then click “Insert Media”.

  1. Click “Save and display”. Your media file will be embedded on the page.

Adding a Media File from Your Computer

We highly recommend that you embed and link videos from the internet rather than uploading videos from your computer because of space limitations in Moodle. However, we understand that you may need to upload a video from your computer from time to time. You can follow the steps below to upload a video or sound file from your computer.

  1. Repeat steps 1-4 above.

  2. Choose either the video or audio tab depending on the file type you are adding. Then click “Browse repositories”.

  1. Select “Choose File” and locate the file on your computer. Then press “Upload this file”.

  1. You will be taken back to the Insert Media window. You are welcome to change the settings or leave them as they are. Then click “Insert Media”.

  1. Click “Save and display”. Your media file will be embedded on the page.

Record Your Own Audio or Video File

You can also record your own 2-minute video or audio file in the content area of a page. This is a great way for you to interact with your students.

  1. Create a page by following steps 1-3 as above.

  2. In the content area, select the audio icon to record a voice message OR select the video icon to record a video from your computer camera.

  1. Press “Start Recording”.

  1. The first  time you record an audio or video file, a window will pop-up asking you permission for DD Courses to use your microphone and/or camera. Press “Allow” to continue recording.

  1. Record your audio or video file and press “Stop Recording” when you are done. Afterwards, you can choose to listen to the recording, try recording again if you didn’t like what you recorded, or press “Attach Recording” to insert the recording into your page.

  1. The recording will appear in the content area of the page. Press “Save and display” to finish.

  1. Your recording is now embedded on your page.
