3.1 Types of Content

Objectives:

By the end of this section, you will be able to:

  • Understand the basic resources available in Moodle

  • Locate where and how to add the page resource

  • Take into account how these activities appear on mobile devices

What are Resources?

At this point you will have created a shell for your course, with some topics you would like to teach (if not, go to module 2.2 Format of a Course).  Your next step is to create content in your course using the “Add an activity or resource” button.  There are many ways to present your learning material in Moodle, including text content, videos or images to enhance your text, as well as providing links to external websites.  In this module we will look at the “page” resource, which you can use to add content to your course.  In a later module we will look at other, more interactive elements.

What Does the Page Resource Look Like in a Course?

The “Page” resource is a page of text that your learners will view and read.  You can type in your lesson, or copy and paste information, as well as add titles and subtitles to keep your course organised.  You are looking at a “Page” of text right now!

You are not only restricted to text in a Page, in fact, it is recommended to offer more than text alone in your content, as variety in your presentation will help keep learners engaged.

For example:

  • You can add images to a page to illustrate your text, like the image of the “Page” icon included here.

  • You can direct your learners to websites outside of your course.  This is done by including hyperlinks or URLs, like this one: https://darakhtdanesh.org.

  • You can also include videos in your course.  Either directly in a page like this one, or as a link to an outside site.

  • As you progress you may wish to include more interactive materials using H5P, a program which allows learners to directly interact with learning materials, as in this interactive video: https://h5p.org/interactive-video.

Finding and Adding the Page Resource

To add a page or another activity to your course you must first click on the “Edit Mode” toggle at the top of your screen: .  Moodle will now suggest areas where you might want to add content:

You will likely want to add your first resource under the first topic that you created.  When this box is chosen you will see a screen with all the activities and resources available to you in moodle.  In the next modules we will explore how to create a page of text, and add images, links and videos to it.

 Lesson Resource

Another method for sharing content with your learners is the Lesson resource, which can also be found by clicking the “Add an activity or resource” button.   Lessons can be used to offer choices to learners as they navigate a course.  Using buttons, teachers can ask questions or provide different activity options for their learners to choose.  Learners can also be redirected towards earlier content if they are having trouble answering a question.

Lessons are more complex to plan than Pages, but they can offer a more interactive style of learning.  You may notice the lesson format in some Moodle courses you try.  In this module we will focus on the Page resource as a first step.  For more details on how to create a Lesson in Moodle, you can follow the link provided in the Resources section at the end of this page.

Resources on the Mobile App

The layout of pages will look very similar on mobile devices to how they look on a larger screen, however if there is a lot of content, learners will have to scroll to read it.  It is a good idea to break up large blocks of content into several pages for easier viewing on the app.

You try:

  1. Log in to your course and click the “Edit mode” toggle.

  2. Scroll down to your first topic.  Below it, click on the “+ Add an activity or resource” button.

  3. You should now be able to see all the activities and resources available to you.  To easily find the Page option look at the menu at the top and choose “Resources”.  This is a more limited menu.  See if you can find the “Page” option.  You will be adding a page in the next module.
