Objectives:

By the end of this section, you will be able to:

  • Understand which pictures you can use in your course.

  •  Add an image to your page in Moodle using three methods:

    • Drag and drop

    • Copy and paste, and

    • By uploading an image from your computer

  • Resize an image in your page

Image Use

Images will help your learners visualise the content that you teach.  It also helps to break up long blocks of text which helps to retain learners’ attention.  Here are some guidelines for using images in your course:

  • Choose images that reinforce the information you are teaching

  • Choose images that will be clear on a small mobile screen

  • Make sure you have permission to use an image:

    • If the image is your own, this is not an issue

    • If the image is from a different source:

      • If you know who the image is from, make sure you have their permission

    • If the image is from the internet and you are using it for educational purposes on the DD Academi site, it is considered “fair use” to share it in your course, however it is important to give credit to the source of the photo: this means to add a sentence below the image with information on where the image came from.

        •  For example:

      • As a rule, do not copy large portions of information or images from another site without permission.

      • For more information about what you can share and how, see the resources section below.

Adding an Image to your Page

There are three main ways to add an image to your page.  First, to open the page, the page title must be chosen from the course menu or side menu,  followed by “Settings”, and turning on the “Edit mode” toggle on the top menu.  Once the page is open, an image can be added within the text in the content block.  Here’s how:

Drag and Drop Method

For this method, you can choose an image, or an image file on your computer, and click and hold the mouse button.  You will then move the cursor to the content box in your course and release the mouse button.  The image will appear in your box.

Copy and Paste Method

For this method, choose an image or an image file on your computer, click on it and choose “Copy”, or take a screenshot using a screenshot tool on your computer.  Return to the content box and click on the spot in your text where you would like to insert your image.  Choose “Paste”. The image will appear where your cursor had been located.

Uploading an Image

For this method, you can choose a file from your computer and upload it to your course site.  In the “Page Content” menu, choose the “Insert or Edit Image” icon:

The “Image Properties” menu will pop up.  Choose “Browse repositories” and then “Choose File”.

You will then choose an image file from where it is saved on your computer.  When you have clicked on the image of your choice, click on “Open” at the bottom corner of the box. You will return to the File picker where you will click on the “Upload this file” button at the bottom of the screen.

A prompt will appear for you to add Image properties.  Add a description for your learners, such as the visually impaired, who might not have access to this image, or click the box beside “This image is decorative only” if it is not important.  Finally, choose “Save image”.  The image will now appear in the content box.  If the image is not your own, make sure to add a sentence below the image describing where you got it from.

Resizing an Image

It is easier to resize an image before adding it to your course, however, if you add an image to your page and it is too large or too small, click or double click on the image to return to the Image Properties screen.   You will see two boxes below the label “Size”.  If you choose a smaller number for one of these boxes and keep the “Auto size” button checked, then the photo will automatically be scaled to a smaller size. If you turn off the “Auto size” button you may end up stretching or squashing your image so that it is difficult to view.  Choose “Save Image” to return to the content screen.
