Objectives:

By the end of this section, you will be able to:

  • Name some document types that can be uploaded into a course page

  • Drag and drop a files into a course

  • Upload a document into a course using file resource

Documents in a Course

You can add documents to your course for your students to download and view. Example of document file types include:

  • PDF

  • DOCX (Microsoft Word)

  • PPT (Microsoft PowerPoint)

  • XLXS (Microsoft Excel)

  • TXT (text file)

There are some things to consider when adding a file to your course. First, students will need to download the file to their device which requires the use of data on their device. If the file size is large, the student may not have enough data to download the file or the file may use up a large portion of the data they have available to them.

Second, students will need to have the right program to open and view the file. For example, if the student downloads a Word file, they will need to have access to Microsoft Word or a program that can open a Word file.

Drag and Drop a Document

The quickest way to add a file to your course is to drag and drop the file from your computer to the course.

  1. Turn on edit mode.

  1. Drag and drop your file from your computer to the main content area of the course. In the image below, the file was dragged from the file explorer of the computer to the course.

  1. The file will be added to your course. You can move the file by dragging it to any section of your course.

Uploading a Document Using the File Resource

You can also use the File resource from the Activity Chooser to upload a file to your course.

  1. Go to your course and turn on edit mode. Then select “Choose and Activity or Resource”.

  1. Under the Resources tab, select the File resource.

  1. Start by naming your resource. Add a description of the resource, if desired.

  1. Add your file by pressing the Add File icon or you can also drag and drop files from your computer.

  1. If you press the Add File icon, a new window called the “File Picker” will appear. Press “Choose File”.

  1. Select the file from your computer and press Open.

  1. Press “Upload this file”.

  1. Adjust the Appearance settings. We recommend selecting the file size and type so that your students know this information when viewing the file.

       9. You can leave the rest of the settings as they are and select “Save and display”.

  1. The File resource will be displayed and you will see a link to your file.
