Objectives:

By the end of this section, you will be able to:

  • Start adding pages to your course

  • Add text to a page

  • Save and review your work

Adding a Page

In Lesson 3.1, you learned where to find the “Page” resource.  In this lesson you will be adding and editing a page of text.

To add a page, you will need to be logged in and click the “Edit mode” toggle at the top of the screen.  Pages can be added in many places in your course.  A good place to start would be after the first topic heading.

When you click on the “Add an activity or resource” button, you will be presented with many options.  Choose the “Page” option.

Inputting Information in a Page

Once a page has been opened you will be prompted to fill in some information:

  • General:

    • Name: this will be the title of the text that your students will see in the course menu.

    • Description: this is an optional text to provide more information in the menu.  It is recommended to leave this blank if you wish to keep your menu clear and simple.  If you choose to add a description, you will need to click the display button.

  • Content:

    • Page Content: this is where you will add the text you would like students to read.  The menu at the top of this block allows you to change the format of your text.  We will go into more detail on formatting text in lesson 3.3 Editing Text and Page Location.

  • Other Menus:

    • Below the content box are 5 other menus, which can be opened by clicking on the “>” sign.  For now we will leave these menus in the default settings, but you can explore them if you would like, using videos from the resources.

Entering Text, and Copy-and-Paste as “Plain Text”

The content box is the space where you will be adding text.  There are two methods for this:  first by simply typing text directly in the box.   Secondly, by copying and pasting text from another source, such as a word document.  To paste text, you will need to remove the formatting for that text to ensure your work is easily readable in Moodle.  To do this, you will highlight text from another source, click and choose “Copy”:

then return to your course content box and click inside the Page content box to open a menu.  Choose “Paste as plain text”.  The text will appear as a single size and type of font (we will look into formatting text in module 3.3 Editing Text and Page Location).

Saving Your Page

Once you have entered your content, you can save your work by clicking either the “Save and display” button or the “Save and return to course” button.  You will not be able to save unless you have entered a name for your module and some text in the content block.

If you click “Save and return to course”: you will be sent to the home page for your course, where you will be able to see your new page under the module.

If you click “Save and display”: you will be sent to the completed page inside the module.

Reviewing Your Page

Once you have saved your page you can go back and look at it and make changes. If you are on the homepage of your course, you will need to click on the lesson title to see the content of the page.  If you want to change this content, at the top of the screen you can click on “Settings” in the menu.  This will take you back to the editing screen.  Remember to save your work if you make any changes.  If you wish to see what your page will look like to students, turn the “Edit mode” toggle off at the top of your screen.

A Note About “Blocks”

Moodle gives the option of adding blocks.  This is a way to add more information to a page, however it is not recommended that you use these because your learners will not be able to easily view them on the Moodle mobile app.
